The Moon—Earth’s oldest night-light—has been pulling at our stories, tides, and imaginations for thousands of years. But beyond the myths and moonlit poetry, there’s something wonderfully useful about it too: the Moon keeps a steady rhythm. And once you learn its phases, you can start using that rhythm as a gentle guide for your own intentions, rituals, and everyday magic.

Understanding the Moon’s Phases

The Moon moves through a full cycle about every 29.5 days. What we see from Earth changes as it travels around us and catches the Sun’s light from different angles.

Here’s the monthly flow:

- New Moon: Hidden in the sky—quiet, dark, and full of possibility.

- Waxing Crescent: A thin silver curve appears—hope, beginnings, first steps.

- First Quarter: Half-lit—momentum builds, decisions get made.

- Waxing Gibbous: Nearly full—energy gathers, plans strengthen.

- Full Moon: Bright and bold—clarity, power, celebration.

- Waning Gibbous: Light begins to soften—gratitude, reflection, sharing wisdom.

- Last Quarter: Half-lit again—release, reset, clearing what no longer fits.

- Waning Crescent: A final sliver—rest, surrender, preparing for the next cycle.

Each phase has its own “flavour,” and many spiritual paths treat them like signposts—helpful moments to begin, build, celebrate, or let go.

The Moon in Wicca, Witchcraft & Pagan Practice

In Wicca, witchcraft, and many pagan traditions, the Moon is often linked with intuition, the sacred feminine, and the cyclical nature of life. Its phases are used as a kind of energetic calendar—supporting different types of spellwork, rituals, and inner work.

New Moon

Energy: New beginnings, intention-setting, inner stillness.

Try this: Light a candle, journal what you’re calling in, or sit in quiet meditation and “plant” a wish.

Waxing Moon (Crescent → Gibbous)

Energy: Growth, attraction, building power.

Try this: Do spellwork for prosperity, love, confidence, health—or take practical steps toward a goal while the energy is rising.

Full Moon

Energy: Peak power, illumination, completion, celebration.

Try this: Charge crystals or tools, perform divination, make moon water, or hold a gratitude ritual for what’s come to fruition.

Waning Moon (Gibbous → Crescent)

Energy: Release, cleansing, banishing, breaking patterns.

Try this: Cleanse your space, cut energetic cords, banish bad habits, or write down what you’re ready to let go of—and safely burn or bury it.

Other steps to take can include:

- New Moon: Write 1–3 intentions on paper, fold it toward you, and tuck it under a candle or crystal overnight.

- Waxing Crescent: Take one “first step” action (send the message, buy the supplies), then whisper: “I begin.”

- First Quarter: Light a candle and name one obstacle out loud—then choose one brave, practical move to meet it.

- Waxing Gibbous: Do a quick altar refresh (water, wipe, straighten), and add one symbol of what you’re growing.

- Full Moon: Make moon water (a covered jar on a windowsill works), then bathe your hands in it and thank what’s blooming.

- Waning Gibbous: Write a gratitude list and leave a small offering (tea, herbs, bread) outside or on your altar.

- Last Quarter: Take a cleansing shower and imagine old cords dissolving; afterward, sweep your space from back to front.

- Waning Crescent: Unplug early, dim the lights, and do a “dream seed” ritual: ask one question before sleep and keep a notebook nearby.

Isn't she fabulous! The Moon’s phases offer a steady, comforting rhythm—especially in spiritual practice. Whether you’re brand new to witchcraft or deep in your craft, working with the lunar cycle can help you move with nature instead of against it: always begin with intention, build with purpose, celebrate with gratitude, and release with grace.

What about you, do you follow the moons cycle? What rituals if any do you do?
